Traditionally, the Thai New Year\u00a0falls\u00a0on a different date on the Gregorian calendar each\u00a0year,\u00a0and is dependent on the Thai lunar calendar. Visits to the local temples for prayers and cleansing of the Buddha statues are conducted on the second day (<em>Wan Nao<\/em>). The third day (<em>Wan Thaloeng Sok<\/em>) is when the fun and action starts.<\/p>\n<p>But this depends on where you&#8217;re at in Thailand.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re in Phuket, you&#8217;re likely to be soaking wet if you&#8217;re out and about on the 13th. The streets are\u00a0lined with\u00a0crowds\u00a0and utilities containing people, all of whom are eagerly waiting to splash out at passers-by.<\/p>\n<p>Loud music and water fights abound in <strong>Bangla Road<\/strong>. You&#8217;ll also be in the\u00a0thick of things\u00a0at <strong>Phuket Town<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.villa-phuket.com\/en\/find\/kata-beach\"><strong>Kata Beach<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.villa-phuket.com\/en\/find\/karon-beach\"><strong>Karon Beach<\/strong><\/a>. On the 13th to 15th the fun and action is liveliest at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.villa-phuket.com\/en\/find\/patong-beach\"><strong>Patong Beach<\/strong><\/a>. Catch the procession\u00a0of the\u00a0<em>Phra Buddha Sihing<\/em> statue at the streets located near to the beach, keep your eyes on the contestants of the Little Miss\u00a0Songkran beauty pageant, check out the art shows and enjoy the flower parade. Of course, don&#8217;t expect to go through the day\u00a0without being absolutely soaked through!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"data:image\/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAAAAACH5BAEKAAEALAAAAAABAAEAAAICTAEAOw==\" data-layzr=\"http:\/\/blog.villa-phuket.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/songkran-phuket.jpg\" alt=\"songkran phuket\" height=\"388\" width=\"700\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1939 aligncenter\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_should_you_do_to_avoid_the_crowds\"><\/span>What\u00a0should you\u00a0do to avoid the crowds?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Splashing the crowds with water (and getting soaked) may be a bundle of fun, but it&#8217;s not everyone&#8217;s cup of tea. If you&#8217;re one who likes to keep dry it&#8217;s best to stay in at your villa.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Celebrating_Songkran_Tips_and_etiquette\"><\/span>Celebrating Songkran: Tips and etiquette<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Don&#8217;t splash out at passers-by riding a scooter or motorbike. You may be doing it in the name of harmless fun, but it could knock the riders\u00a0out or cause an accident. The same rule applies to babies, old people and monks.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure that all valuables, like your passport, camera, wallet and\u00a0mobile phone are stored in plastic bags.<\/li>\n<li>If you need a break from the action head indoors into a restaurant or bar along the street. You&#8217;ll make an easy target if you&#8217;re near the windows, so it&#8217;s best to find a seat located away from the entrance and windows.<\/li>\n<li>Bring along a towel and a spare set of clothes to change into. These should be kept in a plastic bag.<\/li>\n<li>Ladies should take note to avoid wearing clothing in light colours or that are made of thin materials.<\/li>\n<li>Avoid riding a scooter or motorbike.
